How is Holy Week Celebrated in Lucban
Tuesday, 23 March 2010 08:11
The season of Lent is about to end. Officialy it ends on Palm Sunday or Linggo ng Palaspas where we commemorate the entry of our Lord Jesus Christ into Jerusalem. And in Lucban devotees, tagging their children along, bring palm fronds at the church patio in the early morning for the blessing and procession, mimicking the event that happened thousands of years ago.
In the afternoon, a Station of the Cross is held around town. Each station are assigned in every Kawan (similar to barangay) and a "Kubol" is erected, displaying life-sized statues that depicts every major event in the passion of Jesus Christ. It is also the time when people do the "pabasa" or the chanting of the Lord's Passion until the wee hours of the morning.
During Holy Monday, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, the church is silent and no masses are held. Instead, prayers are offered and Station of the Cross is prayed. It is also the time where our beloved priests and bishops perform their annual retreat.
Come Maundy Thursday, the Mass of the Last Supper and washing of the apostles' feet are held in the afternoon. Bells are rung for the last time during the singing of Gloria and kept silent until Easter Sunday. As substitute for the bells, the "palakpak", made of bamboo poles, cut into halves are then struck in a rhythm that is unique only to Lucban.
